Active Riding

Mounted Games were first introduced into the Pony Club WA program in 1965, and the event was held at the Perth Royal Show.  Wallangarra Riding & Pony Club riders regularly participate in Active Riding events.  Active Riding forms a component of the ridden lessons at Rallies.  A number of Pony Clubs run Active Riding events throughout the year, State Active Riding Championships are held later in the year and our riders have also represented the State at National and International Active Riding Championships.

Dressage

Dressage is one of the three Olympic equestrian sports. It is the basic schooling of every riding horse; a program of creating suppleness, balancing and obedience work that prepares a horse for future pleasure-riding or competition.

At rallies we often call Dressage “flat work” and it is one of the ridden lessons on rally day. Dressage competition is open to virtually every kind and size of horse and any age of rider.  In competition, horses perform tests that reflect the movements used in schooling and so, assess the horse’s correct progress towards the goals of suppleness, balance and obedience.

Eventing

Eventing is a sport for the all-round horse and rider in which the combination completes three phases:

  • Dressage
  • Cross Country Riding & Jumping
  • Jumping

Wallangarra Riding & Pony Club conduct an Eventing Competition (ODE) each year and our riders regularly represent our Club at events.  Cross Country (XC) riding/jumping forms a ridden component of our Rallies.  Our XC course is closed for riding in the lead up to our ODE.  Eventing is another of our Olympic disciplines.

Pony Club WA have recently introduced Hickstead and Hunter Trial events which incorporate dressage and a mixed cross country/show jumping course.

Showjumping

Showjumping is the third of our Olympic disciplines.  In showjumping, riders guide a horse over a set of jumps in numerical order, scoring penalties (also known as “faults”)  if they knock down any jumps or the horse refuses to go over a jump. The winner is generally the rider with the lowest score in the fastest time. It is a test of a rider’s skill and a horse’s ability.

Showjumping forms a ridden lesson component of our rallies.  Wallangarra Riding & Pony Club riders regularly compete in showjumping events and have represented the Club at local, State and National events.  The Club also hosts events throughout the year (training/competition) and the Pony Club WA State Showjumping Championships are normally held mid year.

Tetrathlon

Based on the Olympic Modern Pentathlon, which consists of five phases: riding, running, shooting, fencing and swimming.
The Pony Club competition excludes fencing because of the complexity and time involved leaving:
  • Riding
  • Running
  • Shooting
  • Swimming

It is a challenging competition, which combines sound practical horsemanship and general athletic ability and it is very popular with Pony Club members.  Wallangarra Riding & Pony Club has ran its first Club Tetrathlon in 2021.  Our riders represent the Club at local, State and National events.
